Junia

A performative photographic series that reimagines the forgotten female apostle Junia through surreal bodily transformations, reflecting on how history has erased women from religious narratives.

JUNIA is a photographic series inspired by a figure from early Christian history. In the Epistle to the Romans (16:7), the apostle Paul refers to Junia as “prominent among the apostles.” Over the centuries, however, her name was altered or masculinized in theological translations, effectively erasing the female apostle from historical memory.

The series reimagines Junia as a shifting and hybrid figure. Through masks, objects and bodily transformations, the images construct a visual language between ritual, performance and surreal iconography. Rather than depicting a historical portrait, JUNIA reflects on the mechanisms of memory and the historical invisibility of women within religious narratives.
